We are bringing ordering back online on Tuesday 3rd November. Our gift card partner has been having issues, so issuing has been paused until then. We deeply apologise. There are no problems with our system. We will refund anyone who has bought a card during this time, so please get in touch at hello@postandpresent.co.uk.

Food cupboard

Store-cupboard staples that are a living cost, not a hamper.

You know the person who notices the difference in what they cook with. They have opinions about the chicken, the loaf, and the thing they will not substitute. You would buy the thoughtful version of the wrong ingredient. The card Waitrose sells with John Lewis can be used in store or online at John Lewis and Waitrose & Partners. That is a wide shop, and the point of the width is that they choose.

This is a good purchase when you want to help a loved one do their shopping at Waitrose. It is not only a gift for a birthday, a thank-you, or another event. It can help with ordinary living costs: the food they were going to buy anyway, the household things that run out, and the week as they actually live it. The food shop is a living cost even when the aisle looks like a treat. Essentials for the cupboard and the fresh counters are how the week gets fed.

Groceries, the fresh and chilled counters, and the food cupboard are the ranges that will still be there next month. They suit the person who cooks, the person who packs lunches, and the person who is particular in a way you cannot memorise. John Lewis sits on the same card for a towel, a pan, or a piece of clothing, which is still a household cost if that is what they need. You do not pick it.

John Lewis says the card expires 24 months from purchase or last use, and that a purchase or a balance enquiry refreshes that period. If the shop is smaller than the card, the rest remains for a later visit, as long as the card has not expired. They can show the e-gift card on a phone in Waitrose and John Lewis shops. Online, checkout asks for the card number and the PIN.

The exclusions matter if you imagined the card could do everything with their name on it. It will not pay at petrol stations, for car park charges, for tobacco, vapes, postage stamps, scratch cards, lottery tickets, infant formula for the first six months, prescription products, mobile top-up, or other gift cards. It will not pay at the Leckford Farm Shop, Cafe and Nursery, on waitrosegarden.com, at John Lewis opticians, or in third-party restaurants and cafes inside John Lewis shops. Food from Waitrose itself is the living-cost use.

It suits a household that already shops there, a new kitchen that needs filling their way, or a run of ordinary weeks when contributing to the food bill is the kindest thing you can do. An occasion can still be the reason you think of them. It does not have to be the reason the card exists.

Send the Waitrose card through Post & Present with a note, or a short video, and choose the morning it arrives. A day before the usual shop is often more use than a birthday morning. The words you might write are for them, about the week, and they should sound like you.

Say, in the note, that this is for the shop and for the week. A short video of you saying you do not need them to spend it on anything special is often clearer than a parcel. The timing can be the day before they usually go, not the morning of a party.

Questions worth asking first

Where can the card be used?

John Lewis says the John Lewis and Waitrose gift card can be used in store or online at both John Lewis and Waitrose. The e-gift card can be shown on a phone in those shops.

How long is it valid?

John Lewis says the gift card expires 24 months from purchase or last use. A purchase or a balance enquiry refreshes that 24-month period.

Can the rest be used later?

If the order is smaller than the card, John Lewis says any balance remains for a future purchase, provided the card has not expired. Keep the card or the e-gift email.

What will it not buy?

Exclusions include petrol stations, car park charges, tobacco, vapes, postage stamps, scratch cards, lottery tickets, infant formula for ages 0 to 6 months, prescription products, mobile top-up, other gift cards, the Leckford Farm Shop, Cafe and Nursery, waitrosegarden.com, John Lewis opticians, and third-party restaurants and cafes in John Lewis shops.

Is a gift voucher the same thing?

John Lewis says Partnership gift vouchers are no longer available to buy, and that vouchers do not expire, which is different from gift cards. This guide is about the gift card.

Send it toward the week, not only the occasion

A note, a time of day, or a short video is enough. The shop, or the tank, stays theirs.

Words you might write

This is for the shop, so you can cook what you actually want this week.
