Gift card help
Where Sainsbury’s sets out stores, coffee shops, online use, and what the card will not buy.
You already know the person who treats Sainsbury’s as the shop that holds the week together. They have a list, a usual time, and a few things they will not swap. You would get the tea, the yoghurt, or the size in Tu wrong, because those choices are habits rather than hints. A Sainsbury’s gift card leaves the shop open. They spend it in Sainsbury’s stores, including Tu clothing and homeware and the Sainsbury’s coffee shops, and an eGift card can also be used online at sainsburys.co.uk.
This is a good purchase when you want to help a loved one do their shopping. It is not only a gift for a birthday, a thank-you, or another event. It can help with ordinary living costs: the food shop, the cupboard that has run down, the washing powder, and the small household things that never feel like a present until the week they are missing. You are putting money toward a shop they were going to do anyway, and letting them decide what the trolley needs.
The useful part is the choice you would otherwise take away. A hamper edits their list. A card lets them run it. If they want the familiar own-label staple, they take it. If the week has room for something better from the fresh counters or a piece of Tu clothing that actually fits, that is their call. You do not have to guess the flavour, the fit, or whether they have already bought the thing you had in mind.
Groceries are the durable centre of the card. The food hall, the food cupboard, and the fresh shop will still be there next month. It suits the person who cooks most nights and the person who builds lunches from the same few things. Point them at the groceries on sainsburys.co.uk when you want them to look before they go, then leave the basket alone.
Tu is the part of the same card that is easy to forget if you only picture food. Sainsbury’s says the gift card covers Tu clothing and homeware in its stores. That suits someone whose wardrobe or spare room is due a plain, useful replacement: a coat that fits this winter, towels, or the thing they have been putting off because it felt less urgent than food. You still do not pick the size.
The coffee shops sit on the same card. That suits a pause in the shop rather than a night out: a drink while the trolley is being packed, or a reason to sit down after the list is done. It is ordinary, which is the point. Petrol and diesel are not. Sainsbury’s takes those only on a Fuel Payment Card at its petrol filling stations. A supermarket card will not fill the car. If the help they need is fuel, choose that card instead.
Other limits are worth knowing before you send it. Sainsbury’s excludes other gift cards, lottery products, PayPoint, tobacco, postage stamps, in-store concessions, mobile phone top-ups, online delivery charges, travel money, and digital downloads. Online, the eGift card is converted to a coupon at checkout and cannot pay a delivery or click and collect charge. Any rest of the basket is paid with the card on their groceries account. Unspent balance stays on the card, and the in-store receipt shows what remains. The terms put expiry at 24 months from activation.
Send it through Post & Present with a note, or a short video of you saying this is for the shop, and choose the morning it arrives. A Tuesday before the big shop is often more use than a birthday breakfast. Words you might write sit below. They should sound like you, talking to them, about the week rather than about a party.

Questions worth asking first
Where can a Sainsbury’s gift card be used?
Sainsbury’s says its gift cards and eGift cards can be used for products in all Sainsbury’s stores, including Tu clothing and homeware, and in Sainsbury’s coffee shops. eGift cards can be used in store or online at sainsburys.co.uk. Physical gift cards can be used in store and online.
What will the card not buy?
Sainsbury’s lists branded gift cards, lottery products, PayPoint, tobacco, postage stamps, in-store concessions, petrol and diesel, mobile phone top-ups, online delivery charges, travel money, and digital downloads. Petrol and diesel need a Sainsbury’s Fuel Payment Card at a Sainsbury’s petrol filling station.
Can they keep what they do not spend?
Sainsbury’s says any remaining balance stays available for a later shop until the card expires. After each use in store, the remaining balance is printed on the receipt.
How does online grocery redemption work?
At sainsburys.co.uk the eGift card is converted to an online coupon at checkout. It cannot pay a delivery charge or a click and collect charge. Any remaining basket is paid with the payment card linked to the groceries account.
When does a Sainsbury’s gift card expire?
The gift card terms say the value expires 24 months from the date of initial activation. Sainsbury’s says it will not send an expiry reminder.
A perforated note for the week
A note, a time of day, or a short video is enough. The shop, or the tank, stays theirs.
